Road Cycling Accident Claims

If you are a cyclist who has been involved in a road bike accident or a collision with a vehicle, we are here to assist you.

Since 1988, our legal team have represented thousands of cyclists and have gone on to successfully obtain compensation for not only injuries sustained, but also for other costs including loss of earnings, medical assistance, and damage to the bike and kit.

In the majority of cases, we can assist you with a claim at no initial cost to you. Almost all of our cyclist road accident claims are funded through a Conditional Fee Agreement. More commonly known as a no win, no fee agreement, this will mean you will only pay for our services if you are successful in your claim.

The number of people cycling in Great Britain is ever increasing. Whilst these numbers are great for the environment and great for cycling as a sport, unfortunately, cyclists in this country are still very much vulnerable road users.

According to The National Travel Survey, around 8% of the population aged 5 and over, cycle three or more times a week. This equates to around 5.1 million people regularly cycling.

How We Can Help

At Cycle SOS, we are cyclists ourselves. We know the many dangers the roads present and have seen first-hand, the consequences that road bike accidents can have on both the cyclist and on their families.

Common Road Cycling Accidents We Deal With

Whilst we understand that no two accidents will ever be exactly the same, we do unfortunately know that the cause of many accidents can only ever be attributed to a handful of things.

For instance, 40% of the accidents that we deal with, occur at junctions. Whilst just 15% occur in the dark and just 10% occur in the rain and on wet surfaces. In most cases, cyclist road accidents can be avoided and are the fault of the vehicle driver, not the cyclist.

In 2013, The City of Westminster Council found that vehicle drivers were to blame for 68% of collisions involving cyclists and 21% of all collisions between bikes and vehicles were caused by drivers failing to look properly.

Statistics from The Department for Transport Casualty Report identify the top three causes/contributory factors for cycling accidents, as:

  1. Failure to look properly
  2. Failure to judge other party’s speed or path
  3. Careless driving / reckless driving / hurrying

Common causes of road bike accidents involve nearside junctions, roundabouts, vehicles pulling out from driveways, car doors opening into the path of the cyclist, vehicles pulling out of queues of stationary traffic and the collision that can potentially cause the most serious injuries in our experience, cyclists being hit from behind.

According to statistics from The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), almost two thirds of cyclists involved in serious collisions were at, or near, a road junction, with T-junctions being the most commonly involved. Roundabouts are particularly dangerous junctions for cyclists.

Whilst cycling accident claims can be complex and it will not always be initially obvious who is at fault, we are committed to assisting the nation’s cyclists and we will work tirelessly to obtain justice for those involved in road cycling accidents.
