I’ll soon set off on what will no doubt be one of the toughest physical and mental challenges I’ve ever taken on – riding from London to Edinburgh and back again. But before the first pedal stroke, I wanted to take a moment to answer an important question:
Why?
Why take on such an epic ride? And why am I fundraising for Cycling UK’s Women’s Safety Campaign?
I’ve been a member of Cycling UK for many years because I believe in what the charity stands for, particularly its commitment to campaigning for safer, more accessible cycling for everyone. In 2022, I took that commitment a step further and became a trustee. Since then, I’ve been proud to help shape the charity’s new five-year strategy, and to play a small part in the bigger picture of creating meaningful change.
So when I heard about the launch of Cycling UK’s Women’s Safety Campaign earlier this year, it struck a real chord with me.
As a lawyer, I’ve noticed the gender imbalance in cycling, most of my injured cyclist clients are male. And while cycling infrastructure in the UK has improved in recent years, the benefits haven’t been felt equally. A recent YouGov survey showed that while men feel safer as a result of improved infrastructure, the perception of safety among women has flatlined.
That’s why the Women’s Safety Campaign is so important.
Launched in March 2025, the campaign has already gained incredible traction , reaching MPs, national media and local decision-makers alike. Later this year, Cycling UK will run a series of promotional rides to spotlight what good cycling infrastructure really looks like especially from a woman’s perspective. Because if cycling feels safer for women, it will be safer for everyone.
That’s a message I believe in. And it’s why I wanted to support the campaign by doing something difficult, something outside of my comfort zone – and something that gives me space to reflect, reset and reconnect with why cycling matters to me.
Over the next few days, I’ll be living simply: just me, my bike, a few drop bags at control points and the basic needs of food, water, sleep, and direction. But those stripped-back moments are where I often find the most clarity and creativity.
So here’s to the challenge ahead — and to safer cycling for all.
