Colleagues at leading cycling law firm Cycle SOS hopped on their bikes for the firm’s latest charity pledge, raising money for its Charity of the Year, Asthma + Lung UK.
Throughout October, solicitors and staff from Cycle SOS, which has offices in Southport, Manchester and Leeds, geared up to swap their office chairs for bike saddles as part of a fundraising initiative and to encourage health and wellbeing in the workplace.
Around 20 employees at the specialist cycle law firm, which has been championing the rights of vulnerable road users for over 30 years, took part in the 250-mile challenge, clocking up the miles both on the roads or on static bikes.
The fundraising event builds on the law firm’s ongoing commitment to supporting cycling, which sees the firm take steps to make cycling more accessible across all sites. These steps include secure bike parking and changing rooms at all sites, hosting ‘Bike Dr’ events, incentivising awareness days such as Car Free Day, and creating a BUG (Bicycle User Group) to embed a cycling culture within the company.
The funds raised from the event was donated to the firm’s Charity of the Year: Asthma and Lung UK.
Lung disease is the third biggest killer after heart disease and cancer, but rates of diagnosis for some serious diseases are getting worse and only 2% of public spend on medical research is into lung conditions.
Specialist cycle lawyer at Cycle SOS, Paul Darlington, who took part in the challenge, commented:
“I rarely need persuading to get on my bike, even less so when it’s for a good cause. The Race to 250 Miles Challenge was the perfect way for colleagues to stay active, bring teams from all sides of the business together and to raise money for an important cause.
1 in 5 people in the UK will develop a lung condition in their lifetime, that’s someone in every family, workplace, and friendship circle, which is why we thought it would be a great charity to support.”
This latest event follows the success of the law firm’s ‘Office to Office Challenge’ which took part in June, in which employees chose to walk, run or cycle 37.4 miles, the distance between Cycle SOS’s Dukes House Headquarters on Hoghton Street in Southport town centre and their St James’ Tower in Manchester.
