In October 2024, one of our clients, a keen cyclist and proud Cycling UK member, was involved in a collision at a roundabout. He was already established on the roundabout when a car entered without seeing him and drove straight into his path. The driver’s response was worryingly familiar: “Sorry, I was looking for cars, not bikes.”
Thankfully, an off-duty police officer was nearby and immediately assisted our client, helping him and his damaged bicycle to the side of the road. Although shaken and in pain, our client was unsure whether to pursue a legal claim. It wasn’t until December, two months later, that he discovered the legal benefits included with his Cycling UK membership and reached out to Cycle SOS for advice.
Lasting Injuries and Life Disruptions
Our client had sustained soft tissue injuries to his dominant right arm, hip, and right knee. He hadn’t sought medical attention initially, believing nothing was broken, but was still experiencing discomfort and weakness in his arm. This was having a real impact – not just on his cycling, but on his ability to enjoy his passion for bell ringing, a hobby he’d been unable to return to since the incident. He also reported disturbed sleep in the two weeks following the collision.
After listening to his concerns, Cycle SOS arranged medical assessments and helped him access physiotherapy, which provided real relief. With his rehabilitation underway, our client was ready to move on – but first, he wanted closure.
A Swift, Fair Settlement – Without Losing a Penny
Cycle SOS formally presented the claim to the third party’s insurers in January 2025. At first, liability wasn’t admitted. But with the help of strong supporting evidence, including photos and a statement from the off-duty police officer at the scene, we were able to build a compelling case that clearly established fault.
By May, the medical evidence was finalised and we pushed to settle. While we believed a slightly higher figure was achievable, our client felt strongly about resolving matters and accepted an offer of just over £3,200 – retaining 100% of his compensation.
The Membership Advantage
Because he pursued his claim through Cycle SOS as part of his Cycling UK membership, our client kept every penny of his settlement – saving over £800 in legal fees compared to what he might have paid through another firm.
This case is a great example of how Cycle SOS can offer not only expert legal support, but also peace of mind – helping injured cyclists get back on the road (or in this case, back to bell ringing) without delay or unnecessary cost.
